My husband and I host a surgical program, originated from the Stanford University, its called Interplast, that has operated on more that 3000 poor children where we live...it's mostly burnwounds and cleftlips etc., The team stays for twee weeks a time and my husband takes on the post operative care and check-ups. We campaign for months to gather the patients from the most remote areas of the countryside. Also we operate a mobile surgical unit and travel to remote villages to operate free of any costs, on people that are too poor to come to town, those operations are in my husbands branch of surgery. We do that once or twice a month.
My children from when they were small helped us with those programs and were very much involved. My daughter who studies medicine in my homecountry, is herself part of that program and travels abroad. They always admired those people who donate their time (and money) to help others. I even got the congregation involved, some would prepare a meal for the doctors or help organize clinic the first day, or translate for the doctors.

And to answer your second question in your post: my husband doesn't bother with the subject, because his JW patients will do that for him.

Yes, my husband is a doctor (surgeon). Blood is only a issue in highly developped countries where it is available in an emergency. Here in the second or third world, it costs money and time to find, so doctors do without. Since aids the medical world is less irritated about JW stand on blood.

How long before you stopped believing armageddon was on your doorstep?
by bubba flavel ini was born into "the truth" back in 1964. i made the big mistake of getting baptised when i was about 14 or so, purely to please my father as i saw how proud he was when my brothers were baptised....didn't work.. we moved to a new congregation when i was about 8, he introduced all my brothers to the congregation by name, a short bio of thier endearing qualities and how proud he was of them, when he introduced me it was "and this is our black sheep of the family, steve".. i remember living in fear at the fast approaching 1975....actually, living in terror is probably a more apt desciption.
all of you will full well know how it was instilled into us at every meeting and assembly how we are living in the last days.. as a 15 year old, a brother dobbed me in for kissing a worldly girl at school.
went through the marked process, judicial committy, disfellowshipped and the shunning which continues to this day by what's left of my family.

How many of you were baptised at a young age?
by lepermessiah inone thing this site has made me reflect on the baptism practice in jw land.. many of us were raised in the religion, thus you were given the pressure early on to shoot for baptism as a goal.. i remember feeling bad because i waited until the ripe old age of 14 to take the plunge.. looking back, i realize that when i was 14, i didnt even know what my favorite color was, let alone have enough knowledge to make a life altering decision.
yet, growing up in that climate, i would say anyone who waited past their early teens to get baptised was viewed with great suspicion and was likely to be viewed as "bad association".
kids who took the dip at 8-9 years of age were viewed as "wise beyond their years" and the like.. how old were some of you when you were baptised, and what are your feelings on the matter?.

yes Dissed,
Pride maybe an ingredient also. And because I was só commited, leaving also feels as betraying...failing my promise, although with the changed baptism guestions ...... that gives us a reason to review our present stand in the organisation.

Cadellin, I realize I've done what you are doing since a long time.....
You wrote: 'My child is caught b/w two worlds, but I've told him that I will never lie to him, I will always be completely honest with him even if its hard to do. So he knows where I stand and is developing a, shall we say--spirit of critical inquiry?'
Twenty years ago I started giving magazins and books away for free, openly, and endured counseling for that. I also declined to teach my children any of the 'Cedar Point Ohio - teachings' and the rest of years 1919, 1935 etc.... Also the idea that all wordly family and friends would die in Armageddon expect ourselfs....I could not stomach teaching my children that..I have said secretely to them that I believe Jehovah loves mankind . And the biggest of all rule against higher education..I've stood up against ofcourse.

More Misc Ramblings About Gilead
by AllTimeJeff inhonestly, i can't remember if i told some of this already, so if i repeat myself, please allow me this.
i am practicing for old age..... it is now 6 years since i got the "long form" application for gilead, with over 120 questions to answer.
5 years since i got my notice that we were selected to attend the 119th class of gilead from april-september 2005.. prior to this, i really wanted to be a co. i won't belabor the point about my ex jw wife wanting to go overseas, but suffice to say, her goal won out over my goal.
